风格相当硬派，倒叙开头便有极强的冲击力，之后情节便像潮水一般汹涌而来，即使明显缺失了一段老记者的剧情也不影响影片的张力。人物纠缠不清又针锋相对，台词如连珠炮弹输出，在结尾处迎来字面和象征双重意义上的“涨潮”时刻。借助阴影叙事已是黑色电影的经典手法，但是本片的几处运用则稍显刻意。Lee Tracy饰演的Fresney形象极为出彩，嗓音沙哑低沉，言辞尖锐，野心巨大，刚登场便建立了极强的反派气场，也给后面的观影带来了猜谜般的趣味
